A vegan men's sneaker made from eco-friendly materials
Creating a trendy low-top sneaker from recycled winery waste: a bold challenge we chose to take on with the Topsy, the ultimate eco-friendly shoe. Years of research and development have led to finding THE formula for designing a faux leather that looks incredibly realistic, using grape pomace as its main base, combined with recycled polyester.
This manufacturing process follows several very precise steps: harvesting the grapes, extracting the juice, recovering the grape pomace, crushing the residues... The resulting mixture is then blended with vegetable oils and synthetic materials, spread, textured and then dyed, until a material is obtained that is ready to be cut and used for the outer coating of our vegan men's shoe.
But the other components of the Topsy are not to be outdone. At COG, they choose to use as many eco-friendly and recycled solutions as possible.To achieve this, we partner with the best suppliers and production facilities for raw materials in Spain, Portugal, and Italy, who offer us a whole range of eco-responsible solutions for producing our shoes:
Plastic bottles recovered from the Mediterranean, then recycled, are used for the inner lining.
Cork and recycled plastic fibers are carefully assembled for the insole.
The outsole is made up of 30% recycled rubber.
Finally, recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is used to weave the laces.
To fully embrace this eco-responsible approach to our production methods, we've also chosen to entrust the manufacturing of our vegan men's sneakers to small, family-run workshops in northern Portugal. With us, there are no sneakers with untraceable origins, made from polluting materials sourced from all corners of the globe. COG is proud to produce close to home, in Europe, thus limiting CO2 emissions related to transportation.

Comfortable to wear, easy to care for
Our men's vegan sneakers are not designed to be machine washed, because despite the resistance of the materials and seams of our models, the drum could damage the fibers, and the washing temperature could alter the resistance of the water-based glues used in the assembly of the different parts of our shoes.
To care for your Topsy shoes, we recommend using a damp cloth to gently rub the outer part—the upper—of the shoes. Then, let them air dry, avoiding excessive exposure to sunlight, which could cause fading. To care for the faux nubuck parts, we recommend rubbing them in a circular motion with a crepe brush or a soft-bristled brush.
To refresh your insoles, remove them from your sneakers, sprinkle a few spoonfuls of baking soda onto the top of each insole, then place them in a sealed bag. After a few hours, shake the insoles to remove the powder, and put them back in your vegan men's shoes.
Topsy, the vegan men's shoe: a name steeped in history
The name of our Topsy model is inspired by an elephant born in Asia at the end of the 19th century. Sent to the United States, she lived most of her life in New York where she was used to perform in circuses, performances during which she was subjected to numerous abuses.
One day, when a trainer tried to force her to eat a lit cigarette, Topsy defended herself and killed her attacker. As punishment for her actions, she was sentenced to death by electrocution at Coney Island on January 4, 1903.
